Journalism & Writing
Both respected and highly experienced journalists, Tom Knight and Sybil Ruscoe are the authors of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – the Official Commemorative Book, an 88,000-word record of Britain’s great sporting summer which was published in October 2012.
Sybil and Tom have worked in the media for more than 30 years. In that time, they have covered news, features and sport.
In broadcasting, Sybil has worked across the spectrum of BBC News and Current Affairs. She wrote, produced and presented bulletins and documentaries for Radio 1’s Newsbeat before moving to Here and Now on BBC One and News 24. She has covered General Elections and major news and sports stories around the world.
She rightly earned her reputation as one of the nation’s foremost live broadcasters working on BBC Radio 5 Live, where she presented the afternoon show, Ruscoe & Co, interviewing thousands of people from politics, sport and entertainment.
She was a key member of the team that launched Channel 4’s RTS and BAFTA award-winning cricket coverage, becoming the first woman to present Test Match TV coverage in Britain.
In newspapers, Sybil has written for the Daily Telegraph, producing a lively cricket column, sports features and breaking the story that cricket coverage in the UK was moving to Sky Sports.
Tom has covered nine Olympic Games and travelled extensively, covering news and sport for a variety of newspapers and magazines. For 11 years, he was the Daily Telegraph’s athletics correspondent, with a portfolio that included sports politics and doping as well as a number of other Olympic sports.
As a freelance writer, he has worked for The Times, The Guardian, the Independent, the Mail on Sunday, the Daily Express and the Press Association. He has also appeared on BBC Radio Five Live and TalkSport.
They continue to contribute to the national media. Sybil is a presenter on BBC Radio 4‘s Farming Today and On Your Farm. Her coverage of the storms that hit ranchers in South Dakota in the United States was also heard on BBC Radio 4’s PM and From Our Own Correspondent and on the BBC World Service.
Copywriting is also part of their remit. To a brief supplied by Dame Kelly Holmes, Tom wrote the copy for the celebratory full-colour brochure that marked the end of eight successful years of the On Camp With Kelly project in December 2012.
Tom and Sybil have also helped devise a media strategy for organisations bidding to stage major events.
